Nile Perch

The Nile Perch - a freshwater fish - is a distant relation of the barramundi. Found in many African lakes and rivers, it is a huge fish - capable of growing to 200kgs - which dominates its environment. Ours come from Lake Victoria which lies between Uganda and Tanzania, where it was introduced in about 70 years ago. This is cited as one of the worst examples of the negative effects of species transfer. However, it does provide a valuable export. It produces thick steaks of bright white meat.
