Our Terms & Conditions


By placing an order on this site you are agreeing to these terms and conditions. Please read them carefully. Under English law, we may not enter into a contract with any person under 18 years of age. By placing an order you declare that you are at least 18 years old.

General. These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of England and Scotland.

Our guarantee. We intend our fish and our service to meet the highest standards. If you are not happy, we will resolve the situation quickly.


Use of cookies and other tracking products. When you visit our site we place cookies on your PC. These help us optimize our website and keep track of your purchases and login credentials. If you disable cookies, you will not be able to use our shopping system. We also use other tracking products such as Nosto (www.nosto.com) to enhance your experience on our site.
Return of non-food items. If you wish to return a non-food item for any reason other than it not being of satisfactory quality (faulty etc), you may do so at your own expense. We will refund the cost as long as the it is returned to us within 10 days in the same condition as we sent it to you.

Delivery. If you do not answer your door when the delivery driver arrives, your parcel will be left "at your risk". If you are not contactable on the telephone by the driver when he is trying to deliver and your order is consequently returned to the depot, you will have to collect it at your own expense or wait an extra day for delivery.

Cancellation of orders. You may cancel your order at any time up to 12 noon the day before delivery. We will refund any payment you have made, but reserve the right to make a charge of up to £10 to cover the costs incurred by us. For international deliveries the cancellation charge may be up to £20.

Payment. Your order will be charged to your card when the order is placed.

Customer support. You may call us on 01428 687768 at any time. This number will be manned Monday to Friday 9-5 and will otherwise accept a message. We aim to respond to all calls within 24 hours except at weekends / public holidays. Alternatively you may email us at james@thefishsociety.co.uk

Complaints handling. If you wish to complain, please call or email as above. We will try to acknowledge your complaint within 1 working day, and say how we propose to resolve it within 5 working days.


Consent. By using our website you consent to the collection and use of personal information by us as described in our Privacy Policy.


Payment card security. Our card payment site (Sagepay) uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) for security. This encrypts information on input. We do not see your credit card number when you place an order on our website. If we need to call you for your card details in the event of a failed payment, we will NOT keep any record of them unless you expressly ask us to do so for your own convenience.

Emails. If you have selected to receive emails at the end of our order process then you get our promotional emails twice a week. To unsubscribe simply click the “unsubscribe from this list” link at the very bottom of the mail.


Freefone number You can use the following freefone number to update us about your marketing preferences 0800 231 5998. This number is not manned but will take a message. Please state your surname, postcode, phone number and marketing preferences. We will do our best to comply with these within 10 days.

Links to other sites. Whilst we do take reasonable care with links we provide to other sites, we have no control over the content of those sites, and cannot accept any responsibility for them.

VAT. Where applicable, VAT at the relevant rate is included in the web site price. Our VAT registration number is 591 8946 82.

Company details. The Fish Society is the trading name of SAF Ltd, registered in England number 2797697 at 1 Coopers Place, Wormley, GU8 5TG.



Our Privacy Policy

Collection of personal data. We collect your personal information within the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 and the European General Data Protection Regulation. Via your order we collect your name, telephone numbers, email address, billing address and delivery address. We collect and retain fraud score information about your payment card. We do not collect payment card numbers. We cannot read your password for our website, although if we created it on your behalf during a telephone order, you would need to update it to be sure it was private. (You can do this in the My Account section of our site. We urge you not to use the same password as you use for websites that need to be super-secure, such as financial sites.)


How we use this data. We use this data to process your order including phoning, emailing and/or texting you if we have any queries about you order. We keep the data after fulfilling your order to help both you and us should you place a further order. All the data we keep is routinely updated either by you or by us at your request. We also use your data for marketing purposes. For instance we know from what you have ordered which kinds of fish you prefer and we might use this data to make special offers to you. We keep data on your communications preferences – for instance if you don’t want us to phone you with special offers, we make a record of this.


Outside access to your personal data by internet companies. We use outside companies such as Mailchimp, Nosto and Klaviyo to help run our website and marketing, using the personal data kept by us. We use Google Analytics to record your successive sessions on our site, and analyse our site's performance including the popularity of each page. If you ask to receive our promotional emails, we retain your email address on our account with Mailchimp or another similar provider. However, the data in question belongs to us alone and is not used by such companies for any other purpose.


Outside access by other companies. We pass your address and phone number to a courier company so it can deliver your parcel including calling you if necessary. We reserve the right to share your data with any reputable service provider for the purpose of promoting our objective of supplying you with high quality fish and other products. We do not sell, lend or swap your data.

Your rights. If you are unsure what personal information we hold please contact us and we will inform you. At your request, we will delete the information we hold about you.


In relation to various provisions of the European General Data Protection Regulation: We are The Fish Society and you can contact us at team@thefishsociety.co.uk or on +44 1428 687768. Our Data Protection Officer is Alistair Blair. We have no joint controllers. We retain data in electronic form on the following categories: customers, employees, investors and all the other parties any business is involved with such as suppliers. We maintain and process data in order to run the business efficiently and for no other purpose. The categories of personal data we process are described above as are the recipients. Data which we share with internet companies might be maintained by them outside the EU. We would not work with any organisation that did not seem to have a good reputation and we would assume that its data processing was compliant with EU legislation. We have never experienced the need for an exceptional transfer of data and cannot envisage such a need. We review the personal data we hold every 5-10 years, at which time we would normally delete all data relating to customers we have not dealt with over the previous ten years. Our company security is intended to be comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. Sensitive data processed on our website is encrypted. Staff are routinely reminded of the need to protect personal data. All PCs and key systems such as email and our administration website are protected by regularly updated passwords. We do not receive data on customers from third parties other than fraud evaluations on card transactions. We do not believe any of our activities creates a high level of risk to our data subjects
