Herring - whole
- Order number: 213011
- 2 frozen whole herring that have been descaled and gutted
- Herring is full of flavour - try this recipe with mustard and basil
- A 500g pack will give you 2 x 250g fish - ideal for two mains
Herring has a great flavour and is exceptionally good for you, being full of useful oils. True, it’s not short of small bones, but with a little experience and care, you’ll be lifting the flesh off the bones without a second thought. These fish are cleaned, gutted and ready to cook once defrosted. We sell the herring in packs of two whole fish. We juggle our supply between British fish and Norwegian fish. If we can't source the British herring we can usually rely on a Norwegian supply. The oil in herring lends itself well to smoking and curing. We sell a wide range of traditionally prepared herring, see our kippers and marinated herring.
March 2022 update: Our current stock was caught in UK waters.
Sustainability - Our ratings Norwegian - 8/10, UK 7/10
Norway has one of the world’s most advanced fishing sustainability setups. MSC certification was withdrawn from the fishery in 2020 due to Norway and its neighbours not having a sharing agreement. However, ICES considers the stock very healthy. Our UK herring are rated 3 by GoodFishGuide. We buy them directly from a two man day boat which operates within its quotas.
