The megrim is a perfectly fine fish, but it provokes comparison with the Dover sole. This is a contest it will never win: the flesh is less fine, the taste less sublime. But the contest is a nonsense: as if to compare mushrooms with truffles. The megrim is good enough for Rick Stein’s menu, and it has three other significant attractions: 1) it’s not overfished, and 2) it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg 3) it comes in nice large sizes.
