Delicious Christmas breakfast ideas, for the most important meal of the day

You may think it’s a little early to be thinking about Christmas, but we say it’s never too early to think about Christmas! 

As we start to gear up for our busiest month of the year, we thought it would be a good idea to give our wonderful customers some ideas for Christmas morning. It can be so easy to forget about breakfast when you’re looking forward to that delicious salmon en croute or for some the traditional turkey, but we think every meal this Christmas should be made special. We’ve all been kept away from our loved ones for so long and we missed out on our usual family gatherings last year, and now (fingers crossed) we’re able to look forward to this year's festivities filled with all the people we missed last year. So why not go big? Start your Christmas day with a bang and make a delicious Christmas breakfast. If you don’t have a clue where to start, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. 

What people commonly have for Christmas breakfast is different across the world. 

In Mexico the day starts with atole. It’s made from rice flour and coconut milk and baked in a banana lead-lined clay pot, then topped with kesong puti, which is a cheese, and grated coconut. In Jamaica, it would be their national fruit, ackee, and some saltfish or salted cod. Those who live up the Appalachian mountains could eat fried or stewed oysters since the residents are descendants from seafarers. In the UK, Christmas breakfast is usually something along the lines of a full English breakfast or a bacon roll. 

 

So, what do you eat for breakfast on Christmas day? 

You can never go wrong with smoked salmon and avocado. It’s a wonderfully decadent way to start your day, and it’s so good for you as well. There are recipes all over the internet that you could try, but we found two from Olive that we think sound incredible. The first one is avocado and smoked salmon on toast. It has a chilli, tomato and mint dressing to go over the delicious smashed avocado and smoked salmon that gives you a little kick without setting your mouth on fire. Or you could go for the posh breakfast muffins. They’ve got a homemade frittata in the middle that you can make ahead of time and keep in your fridge for a couple days, sandwiched between slices of avocado and strips of smoked salmon. Dollop a bit of creme fraiche and chives on top and you’re good to go. 

Maybe you're serving breakfast for a few more people than you’re used to. If that’s the case, 

what should you serve for Christmas morning? 

If you’re feeling fancy and you’re a whizz in the kitchen, then try these buckwheat blinis with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Making the blinis from scratch will make it all the more impressive and then it’s just simple scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Absolutely delicious! Or you could go with an old classic, eggs benedict or royale. Actually, why not both? The only difference between eggs benedict and eggs royale is that with eggs royale, you’re replacing the bacon from the eggs benedict with smoked salmon instead. So offer your guests a choice! Fry up some bacon, make a big batch of the hollandaise sauce, toast the muffins, poach a bunch of eggs, have some smoked salmon close to hand and you’re good to go!

 

 

Now that works wonders if everyone is coming to your house early doors but what if they’re coming a little later and you’ve been tasked with serving a Christmas brunch? Well, the first and most important thing is that you and your guests enjoy yourselves. This means that you don’t want to be standing in the kitchen while everyone is in the other room having a grand time. Instead, you want to prepare as much of the meal ahead of time as you possibly can. Plan out what you need to get done and by when. The best way to do this is to work backwards.

If you know everyone is going to be arriving at 10:30, and you know that that quiche you’ve made needs 20 minutes in the oven to warm up before they arrive, then you know that you need to make sure the quiche is in the oven at 09:30. Working backwards honestly makes things so much easier for you to plan. For the food, think buffet style. It’ll give you a great opportunity to make a beautiful looking table laid out with mouth watering foods, and don’t be afraid to mix in some sweet things. It is Christmas after all!

Pancakes are a wonderful option, you could make a stack of savoury and a stack of sweet pancakes and just lay out all the potential toppings on the table for your guests to help themselves. You can treat a pancake like a muffin or a bagel, so you can pop some cream cheese and salmon on there for a savoury option. Then you can also have a jug of maple syrup and a bunch of berries laid out. What about some mini salmon and chive quiches that you can make ahead of time? Make them small and bite sized, you’ve got a guaranteed crowd pleaser there.
