La Narval Sardines in Olive Oil
£5.90
  • Each 120g tin holds sardines, hand-cleaned and cooked before canning, then packed in olive oil with a little salt
  • Lay them on hot buttered toast with lemon and black pepper, and use the oil from the tin to dress a tomato salad
  • One tin makes lunch for one, or a plate of tapas for two with bread and olives

These are Portuguese sardines, tinned in Galicia by La Narval, who have been packing fish in Vilagarcía de Arousa since 1966. The sardines are caught by Portugal's inshore fleet, small boats that land their catch the same day, and each fish is cleaned by hand and cooked before it goes into the tin. That's the slow way of doing it.

The bones are soft enough to eat (and you should; that's where the calcium is), and sardines are one of the richest sources of omega-3 you can buy in a tin. It lives in the cupboard, no freezer required, so keep a couple in for the evening when there is nothing else in the house.

If you'd like a slightly bigger tin, we also sell Ortiz sardines in olive oil at 140g.
