Ati Manel Spiced Smoked Sardine Pâté
- One 75g easy-open tin of smoked sardine pâté with piri-piri, made with naturally smoked sardines, extra virgin olive oil and tomato
- Spread thickly on hot toast or crackers, or stir a spoonful through soft scrambled eggs
- Enough for a plate of toast to share between two, or one well-filled sandwich
Smoked spicy sardine pâté: naturally smoked Portuguese sardines with a kick of piri-piri. Most of Britain met piri-piri by way of a chicken restaurant, but the little chilli came into Portuguese cooking by sea long before, and Portugal has been putting it on everything since. Here it goes into a pâté of smoked sardines (60% of the tin), extra virgin olive oil and tomato, made in Portugal by Ati Manel.
On the heat, we'll let the arithmetic speak: the piri-piri is 1.3% of the tin, which makes it a warmth rather than an assault. The smoke does at least as much of the work as the chilli.
Each tin carries 8.6g of protein. We've been trading for 25 years, long enough to know that a tin of pâté and a loaf will rescue most evenings.
